Employer: Omada Health

Background And Opportunity

The $20 Trillion dollar global healthcare market is in the middle of a revolution. For many, many years, the healthcare industry has centralized care around in-person, brick and mortar doctor’s visits – because there was no other option. Today, in our primarily mobile world, that is no longer the case. We now have the technology to deliver care to patients where and when they need it via mobile applications, digital communication tools, wearables, and a number of other vehicles never possible in years past.

At the same time, the healthcare industry has recognized that many of the world’s most pervasive health challenges, from diabetes to hypertension, are best addressed through a combination of medication, behavioral change, and preventative care. While in-person care such as doctor’s visits will always be an important part of patient care, the healthcare industry now recognizes that the bulk of patient treatment actually takes place in between doctor’s visits.

This combination of progression in technology, and a progression in the understanding of how best in class patient care happens, has opened the doors for the rapidly growing health technology/digital health industry. And the industry is booming, as evidenced by the fact that investors poured over $10 billion in venture capital into health technology in the first 3 quarters of 2020 alone.

The buzz around health technology is happening for good reason. We are looking at an opportunity to disrupt one of the largest industries in the world in a way that presents both an enormous market opportunity as well as a very special opportunity to positively impact people’s lives!

Omada Health is a pioneer in modern healthcare and a true industry leader in the evolving digital health arena.

The company has been at the forefront of the creation of the “digital care” industry. Omada’s solution has been embraced by major employers across the country, ranging from Disney to Costco to Salesforce, as well as global health services companies including Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Kaiser Permanente.

Company highlights:

  • Omada is backed by premier investors USVP, Andreesen Horowitz, Norwest Venture Partners, Cigna, Wellington Management, Rock Springs, Perceptive, and more. In 2019, Omada raised a $100M Series D round, bringing total equity funding to-date to $238M.
  • Some of the biggest customers and players in the space have also invested in the company, a great testament that the industry believes in the product (Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield MN, Kaiser Permanente, & Intermountain).
  • Omada has personalized, clinically superior digital care programs to deliver the benefits of a broad and unique multi-product platform including Diabetes Prevention, Diabetes Care, Hypertension, Behavioral Health (primarily Depression & Anxiety), and Musculoskeletal Issues.
  • With a significant commitment to high quality evidence generation and clinical credibility, Omada accomplished a number of “firsts,” including the first digital health company to formally partner with the American Medical Association.
  • Their customer base tops 1,300, and through these customers, Omada has enrolled over 400,000 members, making them a market leader in digital care for chronic conditions.
  • Most importantly, Omada witnesses first-hand countless stories of changed lives, improved health, clinical impact, and savings for their customers.
  • Omada has a strong opportunity ahead for organic growth and has also leveraged acquisition through the 2020 acquisition of a company focused on treating musculoskeletal conditions. The company also partners actively with others to advance the digital healthcare space, pursuing specific leverage opportunities with partners including Abbott, Quest, and others.

Job overview

Omada Health is in the very unique position of playing a leadership role in the creation of an enormous new industry in digital health. They have already single-handedly created two industry defining categorizations within the digital health space: Digital Therapeutics and Digital Care.

Omada Health has evolved from being synonymous with Diabetes Prevention to now offering 5 complementary programs: Diabetes Prevention, MSK, Behavioral Health, Diabetes and Hypertension. These products are all based on the foundation of sustainable behavior change using the combination of technology and a human care team.

The User Researcher will report to the VP Design & Insights.

This researcher will be joining the small-but-mighty group of mixed-methods researchers who make up Omada’s Product Insights team. Our researchers are embedded in work across the organization, defining “what good research” is in a complex and growing company while also getting it done. While we have autonomy and independence, we collaborate very closely with our partners in design, product, data science, clinical, coaching, and beyond.

This role will expand our impact in two crucial ways:

  1. Leading user research in key domains across our product portfolio – you will be the embedded researcher for a set of key domains and projects.
  2. Bringing to life our research skill-sharing effort – there is a huge appetite across product and other disciplines to get closer to our users for downstream usability/concept testing. As dedicated researchers focus our own work on more upstream strategic discovery, it is crucial that we empower and coach our partners to test concepts, refine directions, etc.

Amongst the things you’ll do:

  • Recommend, plan, execute, and share-out high quality research and actionable insights, at the intersection of human needs, business goals, and healthcare/technical realities.
  • Teach the craft of research by bringing non-research team members into the process and mentoring junior team members
  • Join forces with a diverse group of experts, working together to crack the nut of behavior change
  • Adapt best practices and principles in research to a fast-paced, agile environment – looking for opportunities to advance “how we research” through your own work, and partnering with your research team to improve our processes/workflows
  • Meet regularly with key members of the teams you work with to identify research opportunities and challenges
  • Determine the most efficient approach(es) to various projects — from low-n qual to high-n quant — and create processes and timelines that keep the research-aspects of those projects on track
  • Inform every stage of the product design process through upfront generative research, early concept testing, concept refinement, usability, and post-launch feedback
  • Develop strong research questions and establish/manage ongoing research loops to assess change over time
  • Craft compelling presentations that socialize research findings within the company, and help us all stay in touch with the people whose lives we hope to impact on a daily basis — #membersfirst
  • Partner with your fellow researcher to bring your product/project-specific learning back to the “core research knowledge bank” of what we know about our users, and people more broadly

In return, we’ll welcome you into a Product Team full of big-hearted, creative thinkers who strive to maintain an inclusive, positive environment where you’ll feel comfortable and capable of doing your best work.
