Job Description
Title: Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Remote – Austin, or U.S.)
Location: Austin, Texas
Introduction:
The Zebra, named a Best Place to Work in Austin four years running, is revolutionizing how connected consumers research and shop for insurance. We intentionally strive to build diverse teams that feel inclusive for all. Our motto is “All Stripes Welcome,” and we put that into practice by valuing both traditional and non-conventional backgrounds and perspectives. Our Zeebs are passionate about learning, growing, & working together to tackle exciting problems.
The Zebra is highly invested in using data science to simplify insurance shopping for our customers. To support this goal, we are expanding our Data Science Engineering team and seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to support production-grade ML deployment platforms enabling both single-record real-time/low latency scoring and batch predictions as necessary for models trained by the Data Scientists.
Reporting to the Head of Data Science, the role will have the unique opportunity to help set direction for Data Science Engineering at The Zebra and the future of our technical infrastructure. Our code should be well documented, have high test coverage, be configurable, secure, scalable, and maintainable. Our long-term goal is to stand up end-to-end ML systems in the areas of Model Re-training, Model Serving, and Model Monitoring.
We are looking for a curious, practical generalist with a passion for operationalizing machine learning models and enabling data scientists to be as impactful as possible. Our ideal candidate has not only hands-on technical skills and coding experience, but also the aptitude and desire to lead – whether that be evaluating new technology and architecting systems, or collaborating within and across engineering teams to help us achieve our goal of integrating data science throughout The Zebra’s products. The ability to be pragmatic and to balance technical sophistication with the constraints of working in a small (but growing) team is key to the success of this role.
Location:

What You’ll Do:
- Expand and improve upon our existing platform to deploy machine learning models as REST APIs for real-time prediction in Python
- Lead the creation of a development platform to enable data scientists to deliver value faster (e.g. remote development environments, automated model training and monitoring, CI/CD for model deployment)
- Collaborate with other engineering teams (e.g. data platform, infrastructure) to identify areas of opportunity and enable data science across the organization
- Commit incremental changes to VCS while writing well-structured, quality, clean code
- Apply data science engineering standards: Unit testing, performance testing, documentation, modularity, maintainability
- Understands the tradeoffs of using existing tools vs. creating new ones
What We’re Looking For:
As we evaluate candidates across all roles, we look for people who have a strong sense of ownership, great communication and collaboration skills, and a dedication to continuous improvement.
- Practical experience working with data scientists to operationalize machine learning models
- Experience leading large engineering efforts while making a solid individual contribution, understanding where to draw the line between good and perfect

Product Designer – Advertising
at Quora
Remote (Anywhere)
[As of June 2020, Quora has become a “remote-first” company. This position can be performed remotely from anywhere in the world, regardless of any location that might be specified above.]
About Quora:
The vast majority of human knowledge is still not on the internet. Most of it is trapped in the form of experience in people’s heads, or buried in books and papers that only experts can access. More than a billion people use the internet, yet only a tiny fraction contribute their knowledge to it. We want to democratize access to knowledge of all kinds from politics to painting, cooking to coding, etymology to experiences so if someone out there knows something, anyone else can learn it. Our mission is to share and grow the world’s knowledge, and we’re building a world-class team to help us achieve this mission.
About the Team:
Designing a global ecosystem for knowledge sharing and the platform for businesses to reach this audience requires a multidisciplinary approach. We’re building a diverse team with people of different backgrounds and experiences, empowered to shape strategy while moving quickly and learning as much as possible.
Designers at Quora are building a system to democratize access to all knowledge for the entire world. Our work leverages what we learn about psychological and social dynamics, communities and networks, and systems and policy design, in addition to more typical design skills. Product design plays a significant role in impacting product strategy directly. We work on everything from ranking to UI, from internationalization to moderation systems; design decisions are validated through A/B testing and user studies alike, as we value rigor and empathy in equal measure. We pursue candor, holism, and awareness in our work.
About the Role:
Quora designers are strategic minded. As a product designer, you’ll be responsible for what you design from start to finish because designers at Quora control the interface they have a central role on every product team. This not only ensures the right solution is being designed, but that the right problem is being solved. As an integral part of that structure, you will be embedded in a product team focused on a major, user-facing area of Quora.
We’re seeking a designer who is excited to engage with our business strategy and goals as well as building the product to achieve those goals. You will design advertising products while collaborating closely with peers from product, sales, marketing, data science and engineering.
Responsibilities:
- Identify and execute high-impact opportunities for ads products, design features in pursuit of business goals, and clearly communicate decision rationale
- Partner with research and data science teams to understand the needs of both advertisers and consumers, designing scalable solutions with empathy for their needs (advertisers large and small, content marketers, writers and readers)
- Collaborate with cross-functional leads for the ongoing improvement of our Ads related products
- Consult with engineers to develop designs to scale globally across platforms, with designers for feedback and critique, and with data scientists and user researchers to evaluate the impact of your work
- Design interactions for new features, applying or contributing to a design system as appropriate
- Work autonomously to quickly and pragmatically execute on multiple projects
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to be available for meetings and impromptu communication during Quora’s “coordination hours” (Mon-Fri: 9am-3pm Pacific Standard Time). Learn why here
- Portfolio demonstrating digital design capabilities across apps and other platforms showcasing effective interaction design and strong visual design
- Experience designing complex products in a B2B space resulting in clear, effective interactions that accomplished business goals
- Designed and shipped product features either from scratch or iterating on what existed
- Ability to reason at a strategic level about a complex, social product and update perspective with new learnings
- Demonstrated record of using data and/or user research to inform and evaluate design solutions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Shipped high quality, intuitive advertising products, for a social platform
- Experience with effective A/B testing and metrics driven environment
- Experience maintaining and improving a design system
Additional Information:
For Colorado based applicants, the minimum salary range is $125,000 – $129,000 + equity + benefits. For New Jersey based applicants, the minimum salary range is $152,000 – $155,000 + equity + benefits. There are many factors that will determine the starting pay, including but not limited to experience, location, education, and business needs.
Quora offers a wide range of benefits including medical/dental/vision coverage, equity refreshers, remote work reimbursement, paid time off, employee assistance programs, and more. Benefits are country-specific and may vary.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
