Senior Visual Designer

Job Description

Title: Senior Visual Designer

Location: New York City, New York

We are…

A fast-growing content marketing agency that combines journalism, data, and design to create content that resonates with audiences. We get results by engaging customers with content that matters instead of always trying to sell. We work with Fortune 500 clients, helping develop content programs from a handful of blog posts or videos to full-blown branded publications. This role is fully remote and Message Lab will accept applicants from across the U.S. Unfortunately, at this time we are not accepting candidates outside of the United States.

Message Lab is seeking a Senior Visual Designer to join our growing Creative Department. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who values being part of a team. You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, exercising your expertise on design principles, and proposing a variety of executions for the best way to tell a story. You care about the details, the pixels, hex codes, file formats, and the grid. You geek out over motion design, data viz, illustration and interactivity. Most importantly, you believe in the power of combining design with the written word to move people.

Your primary responsibility will be to find the best way to visually bring stories to life. You will be working with our creative team to ideate and execute concepts. These concepts could be in the form of animation, illustrations, data visualization, video, or photography.

The Senior Visual Designer will report to the Head of Creative, who is located in NYC. This position is 100% remote, but we’d prefer your home office be located within NYC for occasional in-person meetings and collaboration.

You Must Have…

  • 5+ years of design experience (preferably agency or editorial) and a solid understanding of design principles and key tools.
    • Experience in concept and design for storytelling
    • Experience in branding, visual identity, and design systems
    • A strong understanding of the web design process, from sitemaps to wireframes to full visual design, and an understanding of design systems
  • An online or PDF portfolio submitted for consideration that shows forward-leaning design skills and a cutting-edge aesthetic.
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills. Designers at Message Lab are a part of the initial creative process, not just responsible for executing teammates’ ideas.
  • Strong ability to prepare, present, and defend creative concepts and work to clients.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills. You will work both autonomously and as part of a team and should excel at leading projects from start to finish both on your own and while working with other designers.
  • Strong time management skills. Message Lab is a high-performing and dynamic environment; you should be adept at prioritizing multiple competing priorities and exercising good judgment regarding client deliverables and deadlines.
  • Solid Technical Skills: You’ll need to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Google Slides and a strong understanding of file types and optimization for the web (jpgs vs. svgs vs. pngs).
    • You’ll get bonus points if you know Indesign, Sketch, Principle, or After Effects, or have expertise with data visualization.

What You Can Expect As A Member Of The Team:

  • Group health benefits including medical, dental, vision, and paid time off
  • A competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • A benefits package including health care, paid vacation, and more
  • A flexible work from home policy
  • A growing team that’s motivated to create high quality, industry-leading work
  • A fun environment that includes lots of laughing, outings, and camaraderie

Senior or Staff Frontend Engineer – React

Job Description

Senior or Staff Frontend Engineer – React (100% Remote)

Americas /

Engineering /

Full-time or Part-time

About Us

At Close, we’re building the sales communication platform of the future. With our roots as the very first sales CRM to include built-in calling, we’re leading the industry toward eliminating manual processes and helping companies to close more deals (faster). Since our founding in 2013, we’ve grown to become a profitable, 100% globally distributed team of ~55 high-performing, happy people that are dedicated to building a product our customers love.

Our app’s frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in React (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest and React Testing Library. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSS (with flexbox and grid layout) using CSS modules and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC. We house our design system in Storybook.

We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. We sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with the Product team throughout the design process. This means diving into lo-fi wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Figma and code.

Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.

We love open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub and on The Making of Close, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Check our projects such as react-custom-scroller, use-infinite-scroll, use-abortable-effect, and smart-tooltip-delay or insights from our day-to-day work on such as Highlights From a Complex Downshift.js Refactor, A Case Study in”Reactizing” a Complex Backbone View, and Finding the cause of a memory leak in Jest tests.

About You

We’re looking for an experienced full-time (or part-time) Frontend Software Engineer to join our engineering team. Someone who has a solid understanding of web technologies and wants to help design, implement, and launch major user-facing features.

You should have senior level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with at least 3 years of that experience using React.

You should have significant experience designing, debugging, and optimizing frontend applications to make them fast and reliable. You have significant experience with REST APIs and thoroughly understand HTTP requests. You have experience participating in code reviews and providing overall code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase.

You should have great product sense and be able to think through user experience issues before diving into the code, and you exhibit a love for great UI.

You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a small and talented team where you’re supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively and collaborate in a fully distributed team.

Note: this role requires you to be located in an Americas time zone. If you’re not located in one of these time zones, check out our other posting here.

We are open to hiring mid, senior and staff level engineers for this role.

Bonus points if you have…

  • Experience implementing real-time (e.g. websockets, polling, etc.) web apps
  • Experience working with GraphQL endpoints
  • An eye for design and experience with Figma, Sketch, Abstract, Photoshop, or similar
  • Led small project teams building and launching features
  • Contributed open source code (core or plugins) for a popular frontend framework such as React, Vue, or Angular
  • Built B2B SaaS products
  • Experience with sales or sales tools

Come help us with projects like…

  • Conceiving, designing, building, and launching new user-facing features
  • Working with Twilio’s API, WebSockets, and WebRTC to improve our calling features
  • Building user-facing analytics features that provide actionable insights based on sales activity data
  • Improving real-time collaboration user experience
  • Expanding our frontend GraphQL usage
  • Extending our React component library

Why work with us?

  • Culture video
  • 100% remote company (we believe in trust and autonomy)
  • Choose between working 5 days/wk (standard full-time) or 4 days/wk @ 80% pay
  • Annual team retreats
  • Quarterly virtual summits
  • 5 weeks PTO + Winter Holiday Break
  • 2 additional PTO days every year with the company
  • 1 month paid sabbatical every 5 years
  • Co-working stipend
  • Revenue Share (after 1 year)
  • Paid parental leave
  • Medical, Dental, Vision with HSA option (US residents)
  • 401k matching at 6% (US residents)
  • Dependent care FSA (US residents)
  • Contributor to Stripe’s climate initiative
  • Our story and team

At Close, everyone has a voice. We encourage transparency and practice a mature approach to the work-place. In general, we don’t have strict policies, we have guidelines. Work/life harmony is an important part of our business – we believe you bring your best to work when you practice self-care (whatever that looks like for you).
