Product

Astronomer is the biggest commercial developer of Apache Airflow, a community-driven open-source tool that’s leading the market in data orchestration. We’re a globally-distributed and rapidly growing venture-backed team of learners, innovators and collaborators. Our mission is to build an Enterprise-grade product that makes it easy for data teams at Fortune 500’s and startups alike to adopt Apache Airflow. As a member of our team, you will be at the forefront of the industry as we strive to make Apache Airflow the de-facto standard in data orchestration.
Your background may be unconventional; as long as you have the essential qualifications, we encourage you to apply. While having “bonus” qualifications makes for a strong candidate, Astronomer values diverse experiences. Many of us at Astronomer haven’t followed traditional career paths, and we welcome it if yours hasn’t either.

About this role

Astronomer is thrilled to be looking for a full-time Web Designer who can elevate our message and brand as we enter an important second half of this year.

Over the course of the past few months, we launched a new website that more tangibly showcases what we do and who we are. We’ve also invested heavily in building a self-service experience that allows anyone in the world to get their hands on our product with $0 and a click of a button (Try Astro). As we build on that experience for our customers as well as the open source community, it’s become obvious that we need full-time, in-house design help across digital mediums to help us scale and amplify our message.

Astro is our flagship cloud service that helps teams run Apache Airflow. Given that we sell a tool to data engineers that can be technically complex, having strong visual frameworks and digital experiences is critical to our success. We’re looking for someone who both has a strong bias towards quality and consistency as well as an eagerness to create process where it’s needed, ship things, and move fast. In this role, you could find yourself helping us launch a new landing page or pitch deck, designing a set of architecture diagrams, owning our booth and swag at conferences, and everything in between.

This is an exciting role with a lot of opportunity. It’s a chance to join a growing startup as a builder who can set a foundation for our team based on everything you’ve learned in your career. If you’re passionate about both visual design and user experience, and want to play a critical role in a company built for developers – this is for you.

This role will report to Paola Peraza, Cofounder and VP of Product Growth.

What you get to do:

  • Review design needs across the company as soon as you come onboard and create a process to keep track of and prioritize those requests over time.
  • Lead the visual design for all new and existing landing pages or experiences on our website. That includes page structure, visual treatment, and CTA placement.
  • Lead visual and UX design for most visual assets – social collateral, pitch decks, ads, t-shirts, etc. This includes our product demo videos as well as our 3 key web assets beyond our marketing site: Academy, Docs, and Registry.
  • Tend to the garden. Maintain quality as our website grows, and build scalable design systems to ensure continued success.
  • Create systems that will help folks across the org access and self-serve the materials they need to tell compelling stories and relay the brand in their everyday work.
  • Use data to monitor and test website usability and performance. Identify opportunities where we can do better from a performance, design, and content perspective.
  • Lead our partnership with design contractors as needed and represent the best of Astronomer in those spaces. This can include animation, video work, or more.
  • Keep us sharp. Follow trends in the industry closely and make sure that we’re staying-up-to-date with the best-in-class technologies and best practices.

What you bring to the role:

  • 4-7 years of expertise in designing for the web platform. As long as you have a strong portfolio, a bachelor’s degree in web design or graphic design is not needed.
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and engineering fundamentals like Git.
  • A strong understanding of UX design principles. You don’t just care about graphics and color treatment – you care about the entire experience.
  • Strong communication. You’re comfortable leading meetings, can articulate design decisions as you make them, and you’re a natural at working with others to land on an end-result that has the highest business impact.
  • A creative mind with an intuition for what to test for. You’re a level-headed thinker with a bias for testing assumptions, experimenting, and having data to show for it.
  • A good understanding of accessibility and a willingness to advocate for it.
  • Confidence with a low-ego. You know what you’re doing, but you also know that you don’t know everything. You have principles to stick to but are hungry for feedback and want to deliver a world-class brand that the whole company can rally around.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience working for a company in the developer tools, data, or SaaS space.
  • Experience with React.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, data science, and data engineering concepts.
  • Experience with open source communities.

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $120,000 – $150,000, along with an equity component. This range is merely an estimate, and the width of the range reflects willingness to consider candidates with broad prior seniority. Actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
