We’re Environmental Defense Fund, a fast-paced nonprofit with a growing staff of more than 1,000 people in nearly 30 countries. We deliver game-changing solutions that cut climate pollution and strengthen people’s ability to thrive despite the effects climate change is already having. We work wherever we can have the most impact, from local communities to top companies to governments worldwide, and even in space.
Our culture, values and commitment to diversity make EDF an exciting and meaningful place to work. Every job here makes a difference. Won’t you join us?
Responsibilities
Locations: Boston, New York, Austin or Remote U.S.
Program Overview
Zero-emission trucks and buses are increasingly available and capable. EDF aims to transition trucks and buses in the U.S. to zero-emission solutions by 2050. The stakes are huge. Though trucks and buses represent fewer than 5% of all vehicles, they account for 28% of climate pollution from road transportation and 57% of the soot from vehicles. The next several years are critical to lock in a pace of transition to achieve our goal. We have opportunities to help leading fleets gain an understanding on how to effectively operate zero-emission trucks and set clear transition plans; put in place national and state-level policies that set long-term standards with a clear timeline for transitioning to zero-emission vehicles; and secure investments to strategically deploy charging infrastructure necessary to support these vehicles and help reduce upfront cost barriers.
Overall Function
The Project Manager, Zero-Emission Truck Deployment will engage with companies and organizations that operate heavy-duty fleets to identify and document best practices for scaling ZEVs, develop plans to transition to ZEVs, and secure commitments to becoming zero-emission fleets. Through this role, the Project Manager will manage relationships with fleet owners, OEMs, service providers and other partners. This person will also contribute to the policy objectives of EDF by identifying fleets interested in supporting key policies and observing where policy fixes are needed to remove barriers fleets face in transitioning to ZEVs. The Project Manager will work within a team of fleet engagement specialists within EDF and report to the Senior Director, Zero-Emission Truck Initiative.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and develop relationships with fleet owners in target industries with the goal of moving fleets towards electrification commitments, deployments, transition plans, and policy action.
- Utilizes and supports the maintenance of databases related to EDF fleet deployment efforts, including grant opportunities, fleet commitments and vehicle production announcements and schedules.
- Monitor industry perspectives on barriers and opportunities that drive adoption of Zero-Emission Vehicles.
- Represent EDF externally, including at conferences, in articles and in meetings.
- Develop and grow a specific area of expertise, such as fleet charging strategies, to complement areas of expertise of other team members.
- In addition to these responsibilities, the incumbent will play an integral role in other activities including fundraising, evaluating and recommending new project ideas; disseminating and communicating project results; and being a team player in the development of a vibrant and entrepreneurial program.
- Must demonstrate cultural awareness and the knowledge, attitude, behavior and skills that lead to a culturally competent workplace. Must demonstrate a commitment to continued self-assessment, learning and growth to increase and broaden culturally competent skillsets that produce effective interactions with people across diverse cultures and backgrounds. This includes the ability to adapt to cultural change.
- Undertake and complete special projects as assigned.
- Participates in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree with at least four years of professional experience; or an advanced degree in a related field with at least one year of experience.
- Previous experience with fleet electrification projects.
- Understanding of opportunities and barriers on Heavy-Duty fleet electrification.
- Demonstrable project and people management skills, including the ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied background and experience.
- Ability to communicate more complex subject matter in writing and orally for senior executive audiences.
- Creative and innovative thinker willing to challenge the status quo and propose new ideas and opportunities.
- Displays leadership capabilities and ability to grow into a thought leadership position, taking on speaking opportunities when they arise.
