What you’ll do

You’ll be leading our Design Systems team and will have the opportunity to help define how Flatiron products and tools should work, no matter who the end users are. You will help level up the way designers and engineers work together and help evolve our Design System into a core part of our software toolkit. Your team’s work will enable product teams to rapidly prototype new ideas and create high-quality user-facing applications that focus on usability, consistency, and accessibility. You will work with designers and engineers across the organization to help define front-end best practices for scalable and reliable code that touches the lives of millions of cancer patients. In addition, you’ll also:

  • Communicate and prioritize Design Systems work that has the greatest impact across our product suite, continually shaping our backlog
  • Mentor and manage other Design Technologists on the team

Who you are

You would describe yourself as a hybrid designer who codes, or a front-end engineer who understands and evangelizes design principles. You are able to generalize user behavior to create a scalable system of interactions that can be used by many types of applications. You enjoy working in Figma and in code to explain your thinking. You’re excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You’re a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives candid feedback, and values the chance to make an important impact.

  • You have prior experience working on a design systems team or as an influential contributor to a company’s design system
  • You have mentored or managed others with a desire to help uplevel their critical thinking and ability to prioritize and deliver work effectively and efficiently
  • You are a systems thinker, with an appetite to dig into complex UI problems and an ability to break them down into small, modular pieces
  • You have the ability to design UI that is simple and usable yet flexible enough to serve a variety of use cases
  • You have deep expertise in design collaboration tools and managing shared design resources in a tool such as Figma
  • You have an understanding of clean, modern web markup in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and experience with front-end frameworks like React
  • You are an excellent communicator, capable of presenting your ideas clearly and in the context of user behavior and technical sustainability

About Opendoor

Founded in 2014, Opendoor’s mission is to empower everyone with the freedom to move. We believe the traditional real estate process is broken and our goal is simple: build a digital, end-to-end customer experience that makes buying and selling a home simple, certain and fast. We have assembled a dedicated team with diverse backgrounds to support more than 100,000 homes bought and sold with us and the customers who have selected Opendoor as a trusted partner in handling one of their largest financial transactions. But the work is far from over as we continue to grow in new markets. Transforming the real estate industry takes tenacity and dedication. It takes problem solvers and builders. It takes a tight knit community of teammates doing the best work of their lives, pushing one another to transform a complicated process into a simple one. So where do you fit in? Whether you’re passionate about real estate, people, numbers, words, code, or strategy — we have a place for you. Real estate is broken. Come help us fix it.

About the Team

Since Opendoor first started operating in 2014, we’ve learned a lot about buying, managing, and selling real estate. The Enterprise unit with Opendoor aims to share our learnings by offering our technology and processes to institutional single-family-home investment partners. Our team is building a modern platform for transactions, offering a wide range of services such as brokerage and title.

You will have the opportunity to design, build and ship complex workflow management systems and tools that enable the Enterprise operations team to execute at a scale that would otherwise not be possible. Our products are built with Python, Typescript, and React.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to all phases of product development including ideation, prototyping, and implementation
  • Building frontend product experiences and backend services, both from scratch and evolving existing systems
  • Partnering with product managers, designers, and operators to identify and solve customer pain points
  • Hiring and mentoring other engineers on the Enterprise team and across Opendoor

Skills Needed:

  • A track record of approximately 3+ years building and delivering production quality software systems
  • Excellent communication skills — clear written and oral communication is important to our ability to operate as a remote team
  • Demonstrated frontend and backend engineering fundamentals — we don’t require knowledge of specific languages or technologies; instead we value transferable experience writing code, system design and scaling existing products
  • A strong sense of ownership and customer empathy — we work very closely with our internal and external customers, and maintaining positive working relationships with them is paramount to the success of our business
