Design Lab Creative Director
Job Summary
Design Lab is FHI 360’s creative studio specializing in design for human development. Design Lab provides design services to FHI 360’s business units to meet the program needs of the company. Design Lab has the pleasure of serving and collaborating with internal clients, including corporate services and project teams. Design Lab plans to grow its external clients base, and the Design Lab Creative Director will play a key role in this endeavor. The Design Lab Creative Director will be responsible for leading and managing the design team, which provides a broad range of creative services, including campaign development, web design/development, digital communication, branding, print design, illustration and animation. Some staff are based in FHI 360’s DC office (currently working remotely), while others work remotely full time from other parts of the country. While this is a leadership position, the Design Lab Creative Director will contribute directly to client projects as needed and maintain their own portfolio of design work in addition to management and business development responsibilities.
The Design Lab Creative Director will (1) lead the creative strategy, art direction, and quality assurance of a wide range of print and digital projects, including large-scale websites, branding, advertising campaigns, social media graphics, publications, and video animation; (2) advise FHI 360’s subject-matter experts about effective visual communication formats and channels; (3) develop proposals and participate in new business efforts related to design services; (4) engage with internal and external clients on FHI 360 projects to ensure communication objectives are achieved. This position can be based in FHI 360’s DC, NC, or GA office locations or be remote working on eastern standard/daylight time.
Accountabilities:
- Manage and advocate for a thriving creative team of art directors, junior and senior-level designers, web and application developers, and project managers
- Serve as creative and technical lead for digital projects; advise clients on digital strategy and help designers/developers make key decisions on design and build approach for websites to ensure the best user experience
- Provide creative direction for a variety of materials including long-form publications, brand identities, infographics, and small collateral
- Oversee accurate and effective implementation of FHI 360’s corporate and project brands in all print and digital material
- Participate as creative lead in client kick-off meetings, present design concepts for key projects, and demo websites to clients
- Proactively provide direction and support to staff to ensure proposed designs meet client expectations and project objectives
- In conjunction with art directors, provide creative direction to subcontractors, printing firms, or production companies
- Responsible for leading the effort to capture new business inside and outside of the organization, and develop proposals to grow Design Lab’s internal and external client base
- Build and sustain internal and external client relationships

Base salary is only one component of our offer. FHI 360 contributes 12% of monthly base pay to a money purchase pension plan account. FHI 360 designs and implements academic, professional, cultural, and youth exchange programs for students and emerging leaders around the world. The Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs (OELP) offers virtual exchange components such as online courses, webinars, and a Community of Practice (CoP) to English as a foreign language educators and other learners that build mutual understanding. We are looking to complement our team’s expertise with a self-directed Program Officer with design thinking experience that can be applied to improving our online systems for educational content delivery and program processes. We are especially interested in candidates with strong project management skills who can collaborate creatively and effectively while balancing, funder, project, and organizational needs and policies when evaluating systems design and making recommendations.
Job Summary:
The Program Officer’s primary responsibility is to understand how various stakeholders use OPEN’s participant information database, user account management system, learning management systems, CoP, digital badging platform, and program website, while also working closely with the vendors who maintain them to ensure complex, multifaceted activities are completed. The selected applicant is not expected to be a coder, but should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of concepts related to systems integrations such as SSO and API, and how data points can be mapped between systems. This role will embrace the challenges and opportunities of crafting new workflows to optimize the use of systems and their integrations. The Program Officer manages OPEN system user accounts, develops and maintains user guides and training materials, and coordinates responses to reporting requests. The Program Officer will maintain our website and own a project to evaluate options for replacing it, including planning and executing a transition.
Accountabilities
Programmatic Management
- Supports project management team by coordinating resources, planning timelines, and leading meetings to assess options for maintaining or replacing the program’s website. Possesses advanced knowledge of systems required to deliver online educational content, promoting and facilitating communication between internal and external stakeholders to visualize the unique experience of different stakeholders and how they can be optimized. Ensures compliance with funder requirements such as protection of personally identifiable information and organizational policies and procedures related to the EU’s GDPR, OFAC and Section 889 compliance. Serves as the project’s data privacy officer. Oversees statistical reporting processes in collaboration with project teams to ensure client requirements are met; aggregates reporting in response to internal and external taskers. Serves as project point of contact with systems service providers. Monitors project risk, specifically related to systems implementation, and informs project leadership of issues.
Programmatic Administration
- Supports project knowledge management initiatives by documenting processes and developing materials to facilitate best practices for systems use. Conducts new hire onboarding for systems and related administrative processes. Assists project leadership with management of SharePoint and Teams sites. Maintains program website, updating content as new information needs to be shared.
Business Development and Proposal Management Support

Finance Support

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Communication and Social Marketing, Economic Development, Education, Technology, or Related Field.
- Typically requires a minimum of 6+ years of relevant experience with project management principles and practices, including:

This opportunity is for you if you have:
- 2+ years experience leading a team
- 5+ years of overall development experience (Ruby on Rails is preferred, however other languages such as Python, Go, and PHP are accepted)
- Deep proficiency with web application development and SaaS
- Experience planning and leading development efforts on large projects
- Previous experience leading and mentoring teams and driving them toward big goals with consistent execution
- You are a great communicator who can succinctly explain complex technical concepts
- Experience leading Agile/Scrum ceremonies
- Previous experience working within a cross functional team balancing product and engineering needs
- Experience with MVC frameworks for backend development
- Authorized to work lawfully in the United States of America as Calendly does not engage in immigration sponsorship at this time
Bonus if you have experience with:
- Experience in modern JavaScript application frameworks (React, Angular, Vue etc.)

What you’ll do:
- Partner with the Business Systems engineering team to identify areas where we can automate processes and create efficiencies
- Partner with leaders across the business to better understand their processes and how we can measure them
- Lead the development and execution of measuring business processes and developing KPI tracking across the business
- Conduct ad-hoc opportunity sizing analyses that will allow us to understand how automation efforts will impact our financials
- Conduct analytics deep dives in specific areas of the business to uncover actionable nuggets the business teams can execute against
- Evangelize data by educating non-technical users on how to self-serve, help them understand what the data is and isn’t saying, and work with them to help them bring your insights into action
- Play an integral role in helping scale the Analytics function at BetterUp.
