CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech organization dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program that is used by millions of teachers and students worldwide each month. We are a quickly growing team of passionate professionals – many of whom are former teachers. Our team is now almost 100 full-time employees spread across ~20 states.
About the Opportunity:
CommonLit launched its free digital literacy program in 2016, and the program began to spread virally. By 2020, over 20 million students in over 90,000 schools were registered for the program. Throughout this period, CommonLit was funded almost exclusively via philanthropy and grants. Since then, the organization has also developed a host of paid products and services for schools and districts interested in implementing CommonLit’s full instructional program. To date, CommonLit has paid partnerships with thousands of schools across the United States. This product-market fit has allowed CommonLit to expand its programmatic offerings and quickly expand its team to nearly 100 employees.
As the company continues to expand, we are looking for a Director of Design who is excited to build out our design team and make a significant impact on our fast-growing organization. This role is for someone who can lead and roll up their sleeves to get things done. You will be responsible for revamping our design systems and user experience to create a cohesive and delightful user experience across all our products.
What you’ll be doing:
- Build and manage a team of talented UX/UI designers to execute design projects and create exceptional user experiences.
- Revamp our design systems to ensure consistency across all products and platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product, Engineering, and Marketing, to understand business requirements and user needs, and translate them into effective and engaging design solutions.
- Lead the design process, from ideation to execution, including conceptualizing, prototyping, and designing new features and products.
- Roll up your sleeves and contribute as an individual contributor to design projects when needed.
- Continuously improve our design processes and workflows to increase efficiency and quality.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in UX/UI design and share your knowledge with the team and the wider organization.
- Champion design within the organization and build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure design is included in business planning and decision-making processes.
- Manage and prioritize design projects, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality designs.
- Coach and mentor designers, providing feedback and support to help them grow and develop in their roles.
- Build a culture of collaboration, creativity, and innovation within the design team and the organization.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with a proven track record of designing successful products and experiences.
- Experience leading and managing design teams, with a passion for building and developing talent.
- Strong portfolio showcasing your design skills and problem-solving abilities, with experience designing for web and mobile.
- Expertise in UX/UI design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and levels.
- A passion for delivering exceptional user experiences and an obsession with detail.
- Experience with design systems and creating and maintaining design guidelines and principles.
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Compensation:

About the Role
At Patreon, we deal with some of the most sensitive data such as patrons’ payment methods, creators’ financial information to process payouts, along with several other bits of personal information from patrons and creators alike. We process over a billion dollars annually. Our security team takes on the responsibility of protecting and safeguarding this data, and making sure these transactions proceed without being tampered with.
We are looking for an engineer to act as the tech lead for our database team. This role allows for remote work.
What you will do:
- Design, architect, and implement Patreon’s next generation relational database strategy to support high availability, low latency, and scalability of a rapidly growing platform
- Implement self-service database tooling to automate complex tasks such as database provisioning and schema migrations
- Design and implement database tooling for CI/CD environments
- Partner with technical leaders to define data access and caching best practices for Patreon’s core application.
- Partner with cross functional leaders across engineering to understand pain points and proactively build a more robust database platform
- Provide architectural, design, and guidance to software development teams to improve application performance when accessing databases
- Build tooling and process to ensure databases are performant and cost efficient
- Respond to and, when appropriate, resolve or escalate database incidents
Skills and experience you possess:
- 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or Site Reliability Engineer with a focus on high scale MySQL deployments running in the cloud (preferred AWS)
- Experience with horizontal sharding technologies (preferred Vitess / Planetscale)
- Hands-on experience with Python or similar programming languages
- Working knowledge of cloud native environments and container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes
- You demonstrate high engineering craft and are passionate about being a bar raiser

Overview
The Product team is focused on delivering technology solutions which power AbleTo’s delivery of high-quality behavioral healthcare. We build intuitive and seamless experiences that bring together user-centered design principles with evidence-based clinical best practices to support members through their care journey, as well as developing platform solutions that support our teams in treating participants.
In this role, you will be responsible for AbleTo’s participant-facing onboarding capabilities and experiences. You will develop and support solutions which allow people to register for an AbleTo program, help them navigate to the right program for their needs, and set them up for success within that program. You will gain broad exposure to AbleTo’s business, understanding our different product lines, sales processes, and clinical protocols, while building delightful, intuitive, and informative participant experiences.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the vision, strategy, and implementation for AbleTo’s participant-facing onboarding experiences and capabilities
- Drive improvements to and expansion of AbleTo’s digital participant onboarding to allow more people to access care, make it easier for them to access that care, ensure they’re routed to the right level of care, and set them up for success as they begin their program
- Work in an agile environment, leading a team of engineers, designers, and clinicians, as well as partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to achieve your goals
- Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis about AbleTo’s participant onboarding experiences; understand trends, generate and validate hypotheses, and run A/B tests to improve the user experience
- Develop products that achieve the quadruple aim of improving the health of participants, enhancing the participant experience, increase efficiencies in the healthcare ecosystem, and support AbleTo’s providers in delivering care

- is fluent in English
- has experience creating wireframes and doing user testing
- has a sensitive/keen ear and can understand the implied meaning behind what users say (does not just take the response at face value)
- can do rapid prototyping on the fly based on user feedback
- applies changes or updates based on user feedback and not just gut intuition
- can organize tasks, scenarios, and discussions well
- has experience with product analytics tools like Amplitude
- can work at least 25 hours per week on a regular, long-term basis. Ideally, we are looking for someone to be full-time on this, and for this to be their sole focus.
