Day in the Life

The Supplemental and Interventions (SIS) group at HMH is focused on building innovative educational content and software to meet the challenges facing teachers and learners. We design and build digital & print content, applications, and services used by millions. The VP, Learning Experience Design (LXD) reports to the SVP, Product Development and is responsible for leading a team of Learning Experience Designers across a portfolio of products to ensure the greatest impact on student outcomes and teacher support, as well as defining and implementing metadata strategies and authoring solutions across SIS. This role will represent curriculum and learning experience design approaches with internal and external stakeholders and will partner closely with colleagues across the organization to build inventive solutions that solve problems for teachers and students.

High level summary and Realistic Preview of Job

The VP will:

  • Directly lead and manage teams of Learning Experience Designers with a digital-first focus and with content developed for all current interactive digital media formats and platforms.
  • Lead three-four direct reports with a span of 12-15 LXDs.
  • Apply learning design; content expertise; market awareness; and technological knowledge to lead teams to create innovative solutions
  • Apply learning science and research to guide the team in analyzing, creating, and integrating pedagogical features throughout product development.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert internally and externally.
  • Serve as stakeholder and learning experience design lead across scrum teams, and support teams providing recommendations, prioritizations, experimental ideas, and potential trade-offs to product management.
  • Influence a content authoring vision and own the corresponding strategy and execution across SIS products. The VP will work closely with leaders across lines of business on alignment, integration capabilities, workflows, and dependencies.
  • Provide thought leadership and coaching across teams to optimize the use of authoring tools in ways that elevate content, engage students, and can scale across the organization.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and professional development for talent within the team.
  • Establish relationships within and out of the organization to enable the creation of market-leading solutions.
  • Optimize workflow processes.
  • Lead RFP analysis and response as needed.
  • Leverage customer feedback via multiple channels to develop solutions for challenging problems.
  • Provide estimates for budgetary planning purposes and manage to an operating expense and capital budget.
  • The ideal candidate has experience:
    • Defining and executing a scalable content metadata strategy authoring approach across an organization or line of products.
    • Leveraging content authoring tools to create engaging content at scale.
    • Synthesizing customer needs and recommending approaches to build and release quick wins to increase customer satisfaction, along with longer-term product enhancements.
    • Experimenting with process and product ideas via rapid prototyping or other mechanisms that provide evidence and enable quick adjustment.

What you’ll need:

  • 8 years of experience leading team(s) responsible for learning experience design, content creation, instructional design, or similar focus with demonstrable results quantified in student outcome metrics, NPS, revenue growth, or relevant metric.
  • 10 years of experience in K12 edtech or higher ed, with K12 preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education or instructional design, or relevant discipline; master’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience leading team(s) through change management
  • Understanding of content authoring tools to create content at scale.
  • Ability to successfully build relationships and navigate in a matrix-organization to deliver on a shared vision.
  • Ability to connect the team’s work every day to the company vision.

Preferred but not necessary: Experience with agile product development
