The Senior UX Designer, Web is a vital role helping to drive our highest-profile, highest-impact area: our web apps for the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Tens of millions of people come to us on the web, and this design leader will help drive leaps in how we enable subscribers and users to discover content and journalism they love, need, and come back for drive feature adoption and improve customer satisfaction and retention. Our two core measures for success are subscriber growth and engagement, and you’ll be a core part of our Engagement UX team critical cross-functional squads composed of expert product managers, UX researchers, UX designers, and working in tandem with product engineers.

The work of these teams is central to our mission to deliver the best subscriber experience possible. You will use your expertise to ensure that feature discovery and the subscription experience are effortless, delightful, and effective. To deliver a best-in-class platform, you will lead design and build products our readers love based on insights, data, user testing, and design intuition. The products you produce will provide vital support to Caltimes’ business as the company continues to grow.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the experience design for the Engagement team, improving the user’s experience by helping users and subscribers find the best and most relevant content they’ll love, come back for and pay for
  • Work on the entire lifecycle of the engagement experience, leveraging design strategy, IA, heuristic auditing, product planning, user flow/journey mapping, wireframing, prototyping, high fidelity comps, A/B testing, and collaboration with engineers on implementation
  • Identify key user problems and opportunities for improvement in our products and process and take the initiative to recommend solutions
  • Lead brainstorming and critique sessions that foster big thinking while raising the bar on the details
  • Collaborate closely with engagement team members, including product managers, engineers, UX researchers, and other cross-functional teams, in drafting & brainstorming initial concepts
  • Advocate for and leverage both quantitative and qualitative research initiatives
  • Using a data-driven approach, create visual design variations for A/B testing (quarterly test roadmap) and rapidly iterate with rational design adjustments based on testing results
  • Balance the needs of the users and the business

Qualification:

  • 8+ years of professional experience working on digital products as a UX Lead
  • Expert UX/IA experience
  • Software expertise with modern product design tools such as Sketch, Figma, and Adobe Creative Suite, and using wireframing and prototyping tools, such as Invision, Omnigraffle, XD or Balsamiq
  • Experience designing and launching several successful web and mobile products
  • Contribute to the growth of your colleagues by providing feedback, candid critiques, and bringing fresh thinking to the team
  • Ability to grasp the essence of user struggles and complex design problems and translate them to practical design solutions
  • Can thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, agile environment while also leading process improvement efforts
  • Demonstrate and articulate an understanding of layout, typography, and visual hierarchy, coupled with user-centered design and product best practices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, & emotional intelligence
