Job Description

Senior User Experience Designer

Product Management

Remote, United States

Hi, We’re AppFolio.

We’re innovators, changemakers, and collaborators. We’re more than just a software company — we’re a cloud-based powerhouse that creates products to make our customers’ lives easier. We’re revolutionizing the way people do business, and we want your ideas, your enthusiasm, and your passion to help us keep on innovating.

We love where we work, and you can, too.

AppFolio is looking for a User Experience Designer to join our team of SaaS Platform Product Designers.

Information Architecture (IA) is an exciting and complex domain in AppFolio’s Property Management application – an application that serves tens of thousands of users every day. Search and navigation, which are at the core of AppFolio’s Information Architecture, are essential offerings of our product. Appfolio’s all-star IA team has been tasked with making all relevant information in our Property Management application findable, usable, and understandable.

We seek a seasoned UX and design evangelist to take on the role of crafting a rich, empowering IA experience across AppFolio. This candidate should have 3+ years of experience in SaaS product design and development. Ideally, this candidate will also have specific examples of work on a SaaS product’s navigation, search, page layouts, and/or other IA-related work.

What will you do:

  • Continually improve the experience of AppFolio’s entire Information Architecture – from how a user navigates our application to how a user searches through our vast amount of data.
  • Refine, design, and improve the AppFolio search experience for our customers.
  • Craft governance documentation and work closely with internal AppFolio development teams on navigational and IA-related requests and builds.
  • Learn the constraints of the software, and how to properly push against them to propel our user experience forward.
  • Work iteratively and with a highly critical eye for detail and mitigate risk by providing long-term design ownership.
  • Obsessively learn the product, our users, and their needs to craft the experience of the Information Architecture space.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A designer passionate about crafting best-in-class IA solutions that are entwined with complex technical constraints.
  • A strategic UX partner looking to grow their long term investment on a strong development team in the Information Architecture space.
  • A fearless customer advocate, who constantly seeks out ways of improving the lives of our users strategically and proactively.
  • A product designer who understands the complexities and nuances of large scale SaaS products, especially in regard to navigation, search, and IA.
  • A disrupter who follows a personal philosophy of challenging assumptions and constantly asking the question, “what could this experience be that it isn’t today”?
  • A technical wizard who is comfortable working in the boundaries of APM’s complex tech stack, and who can understand and advocate for the best UX within those technical boundaries.
  • An experiential advocate who utilizes UX best practices in regards to searching large swaths of data and making complex information accessible.
  • A nimble teammate with experience working on Agile product teams and crafting iterative, fast solutions to complex SaaS problems.
  • An empath who is passionate about the property management industry, and specifically about making our application easier to use, more accessible, and highly intelligent.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of experience as a UI, UX, or Product Designer with long term investment in a single product area or focus.
  • Proficiency with best-in-class design and documentation tools (ie, Figma, Coda).
  • Experience collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers.
  • Experience not only performing user research and collecting data to make decisions – but also presenting those decisions to relevant stakeholders.
  • A keen eye for design improvements and visual detail.
  • A portfolio or collection of past work that relates to this job’s requirements.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills: both synchronously and asynchronously.
