We are currently seeking a full-timeSenior Staff Engineerto join ourPolicy & Ratings Departmentas a mechanical equipment specialist focused on regulatory and research initiatives. As a member of the Energy Solutions team, you will have a broad impact on state, national and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, city and state governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. The candidate selected to fill this position will have experience in an array of technologies with deep technical expertise in HVAC, refrigeration, and other mechanical systems common in residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. This includes a comprehensive understanding of equipment efficiency and building / system design interactions to achieve enhanced energy performance.Technologies of particular importance include but are not limited to: heat pump technologies (including air-source heat pumps, hydronic heat pumps, and variable refrigerant flow systems), energy and heat recovery systems, dedicated outdoor air systems, refrigeration systems, motor driven systems (including high performance fans and pumps and air distribution system design), low global warming potential refrigerants, thermal energy storage, and load management / demand flexibility.A track record of successful codes and standards strategy development and stakeholder engagement is helpful, including experience with state and federal codes and standards proceedings, test procedure development, negotiated rulemakings, model codes and reach/stretch codes.

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and lead both short-term and long-term strategies to optimize energy savings, load management potential, and GHG reductions through codes and standards or other energy policy proposals
  • Analyze the savings, costs, and other impacts of energy efficient and low carbon technologies in the context of energy policy
  • Oversee product testing and other primary data collection strategies needed to fill data gaps in policy settings
  • Participate in industry working groups and technical committees in support of voluntary or mandatory standards and test procedure updates
  • Develop strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure policy proposals are feasible, equitable, and have ample stakeholder support
  • Write reports on technical topics, such as Title 24 code change proposal reports, including energy savings analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, and market impacts analyses
  • Develop and deliver presentations on technical topics to a variety of audiences, including clients, government agency decision makers, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Represent clients in public meetings, negotiated rulemakings, and in publicly docketed comments

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical engineering preferred)
  • At least 10 years of engineering or work experience in related area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Masters degree in engineering and/or PE license (mechanical engineering preferred)
  • At least 12 years of engineering or work experience in related area
  • Experience in the development process of Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 189.2, IECC, or other energy codes
  • Experience in the development process of Californias Title 20, US DOEs Appliance Standards Program, EPAs Energy Star Program, or other state, national, or international appliance or equipment standards efforts.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to write reports, technical papers, and provide technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences
  • Experience representing large organizations in public meetings, including government hearings
  • Track record of success working in collaborative roles with diverse teams of partners and industry stakeholders
  • Existing network of professional contacts that contribute to codes and standards development
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges to support our companys mission
  • Willingness to conduct occasional business travel
