The Sr. Director of Design is responsible for creating and managing the development of the brand’s prototype and the guidelines that will support it. This position will help drive the pipeline of new stores by leading our store design both internally and externally as a part of our national expansion. This position will also manage our architects while partnering with real estate and construction to execute our pipeline in a way that represents the brand. They will work closely with various leaders to land the retail stores as a billboard for the brand and help uplevel the team member and customer experience. This position will have a high impact on the entire store development cycle and plans.
Leadership & Functional Responsibilities
- Execute a customer obsessed mindset: our customers are twofold: internal team members, and operations stakeholders as well as our external customers who engage with the brand through our retail coffee shops
- Will provide design guidance and guidelines for AOR and other internal design managers.
- Execute brand design via the aforementioned, by designing projects personally, managing AOR partners, and working with consultants as needed to achieve company goals & meet company standards
- Active contributor to design teams, to collaborate on new standards, national expansion strategies and art programs as well as contribute to format innovation, exploration testing and prototypes working with the R+D and Ops teams.
- Collaborative: active communication, working with internal design teams, regional development team, and company cross- functional stakeholders in operations, technology, culinary, and brand.
- Partners with Construction and Real Estate teams to successfully manage store development pipelines.
- Coordinate with architectural and civil consultants to develop preliminary planning submittal packages for city review and approval
- Assess new locations to ensure capability with current store prototype working with AOR partners across the country regarding site assessments and flagging any potential issues prior to lease signing
- Successfully negotiating with regulatory agencies, lead projects from site assessment to opening, including layout, CD production and review, permitting, assist in construction administration, and punch when necessary
- Responsible for hitting development timelines and budget goals
- Ability to prioritize work based on impact and urgency, to deliver on commitments and drive departmental initiatives and achieve results
- Problem solve, quickly escalates and identities roadblocks when prioritization is unclear
Education & Skill Requirements
- 10yrs+ experience in design and development of national restaurant/retail brand
- Portfolio of past works and/or Degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or other related field
- Strong knowledge of restaurant retail and/or development
- Knowledgeable in architecture (ADA, codes, planning approvals, permitting timeframes)
- Experience in site design as well as interior layouts
- Project Management experience (Preferred)Ability to manage outside consultants
- Preferred Software Knowledge: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Bluebeam
- Strong written/verbal skills
- Strong sense of urgency & ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work well autonomously but also in a team environment
- US Military or Veteran is a PLUS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard reach, stoop kneel to install computer equipment
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work
Light to moderate lifting is required
Ability to uphold the stress of traveling
Regular, predictable attendance is required; including quarter-driven hours as business demands dictate.
Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
Ability to work in a confined area.
Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
