About the Role

Title: Scientist

FAST Labs – Microwave/Mixed Signal/Photonic IC (Hybrid)

Location: MA-Burlington

Job Description
BAE Systems is looking for a Microwave / Mixed-Signal / Photonic Integrated Circuit Scientist to join their Advanced Electronics research group, part of BAE Systems’ FAST Labs™. FAST Labs is a world-class research and microelectronics production organization. Our vision, ‘we secure the future through fearless innovation’, fuels our curiosity, and propels our teams to take on ‘never been done before’ challenges. We believe how we work is just as important as what we work on, and we are guided by three key principles: We are one team who embraces the power of learning, collaboration, and inclusion; We innovate for impact; and Our innovation is multidimensional.
We are seeking qualified candidates to develop custom microwave, mixed-signal, and photonic IC solutions, for our next generation broadband multi-function DoD systems in RF/EW, EOIR, and Cyber domains. The ideal candidate for this position is expected to provide novel technical contribution to research and development projects, and contribute individually to teams executing custom integrated circuit R&D activities tangential to their specific expertise. The candidate will be required to drive the entire research cycle, from concept to execution to test, for subsets of larger programs or as the Principal Investigator (PI) on smaller activities, including identifying and coordinating resource needs apart from themselves. Additionally, the candidate is expected to apply their technical expertise in support of new research program creation through customer engagement and proposal writing.
The candidate should look forward to developing their own scientific and/or entrepreneurial prowess, such that in the future they are able to leverage their position, reputation, and technical expertise to create and lead large-scale research programs that advance technology for purposes of providing differentiating capabilities for BAE Systems, the United States, and our allies.
In this job role, qualified candidates can expect to:
Heavily collaborate across teams made up of widely diverse expertise.

  • Contribute to relevant research activities as an individual contributor or by leading a small team of 1-3 people as principal investigator.
  • Lead the research, design, development, execution, and implementation of novel, state-of-the-art microwave, mixed-signal, and photonic integrated circuit designs.
  • Contribute to project technical reviews, through generation and presentation of review-ready material, and by providing subject matter expertise feedback during reviews.
  • This position can be based out of our Merrimack, NH or Burlington, MA; Other BAE locations (such as Reston, VA; Arlington, VA; San Diego, CA; Raleigh, NC; Columbia, MD facilities) or fully remote may be possible.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience executing projects in state-of-the art technology associated with microwave / mixed-signal / photonic IC architecting, design implementation, and EDA tool flows.
  • Track record of technical innovation as evidenced by journal and conference publications or patent filings.
  • Knowledge of integrated circuit/ASIC design from concept through layout and tapeout, with experience in any of the following areas:
    • Multi-disciplinary (microwave design, mixed-signal design, photonic design, system theory, signal processing)
    • EDA design and simulation tool experience (Cadence, Virtuoso, EMX, HFSS, Lumerical, Simulink, SystemVue, etc)
    • Experience designing highly integrated systems (system-on-chip, transceivers, synthesizers, etc)
    • Experience in multi-disciplinary chip design effort (analog, RF, photonic and digital design)
    • Hands on experience with test of integrated solutions and data analysis
  • Interested in customer engagement and customer relationship building.
  • Ability to obtain clearance at the DoD Secret level or higher.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • PhD in electrical engineering or related field or Master’s Degree with 3+ years of professional research experience.
  • Prior experience as principal investigator on DoD R&D programs.
