Function/Duties of Position

The Research/Business Analyst is a key contributor and collaborator on a wide variety of research projects supported by the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute. Working closely with investigators, the Analyst has primary responsibility for eliciting, defining, and documenting business, functional and technical requirements for OCTRI’s research informatics software developers to use in the ­design and construction of innovative database-driven research applications using Scrum development methodology. Together with other Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) staff, the incumbent in this position

(i) collaborates with a wide variety of multi-disciplinary scientific teams, research staff, and informatics staff to formulate, explore, and apply Informatics and IT principles to a broad range of biomedical research problems

(ii) translates abstract research processes into concrete use cases, and business, functional, and technical requirements and user stories

(iii) tests developed research applications

(iv) communicates system/application designs to technical and non-technical peers, both verbally and in writing

(v) contribute to the general body of Informatics knowledge by pursuing opportunities to present and publish on methods developed as part of investigator research team and as a member of CRI.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (4 yr) in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other related discipline and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience; OR AA/RN (2 yr) and 3 years of relevant experience
  • 1 to 3 years experience defining, documenting and developing business, technical, and functional specifications/requirements for database/software design
  • Extremely organized self-starter with strong sense of priority, urgency, attention to detail, and commitment to deadlines
  • Able to effectively lead meetings with a diverse group of stakeholders to elicit and document business, functional and technical requirements
  • Able to effectively advise researchers on appropriate reseach data management commensurate with resource and time constraints
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and similar software tools
  • Able and willing to learn new technologies and acquire skills as required
  • Superior communication (written, verbal and presentation) and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate clearly, positively and effectively
  • Ability to express complex technical concepts clearly and effectively in a multi-diciplinary setting
  • Must be sufficiently adaptable to accept and perform, in a timely and effective manner, work assignments that are outside the normal (day-to-day) routine

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other scientific discipline
  • Experience in biomedical informatics or IT in a research setting highly preferred
  • Knowledge of human subjects research compliance
  • Experience with biobanking or Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
  • Experience with research design and data analysis
  • Ability to understand whole systems and how elements within a system are related
  • Working knowledge of SQL and database design

Working conditions:

  • Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week. Rare evening and weekend hours may be needed for special projects
  • This position is eligible for remote work with the understanding that the employee may be asked to come into the office for in-person meetings which are arranged in advance with their manager and that they must be able to cover associated travel costs. Details regarding schedule, required technology, environment and other OHSU conditions are detailed in the remote work documentation filled out by the employee and manager and approved by the manager. The employee must be eligible for remote work by having satisfactory job performance and completed any hiring probation (if required)
  • Must be able to sit and work on a computer for the majority of the workday
