We are seeking a Product Designer with expertise in visual design and design systems. In this role, the Product Designer brings a deep knowledge of design principles, best practices, pattern libraries, component-driven design, and accessibility web standards. This role must collaborate effectively with stakeholders, content designers, product managers, delivery managers, and software engineers to deliver inclusive and strategic digital experiences.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about developing digital services for large federal and state government agencies, and the people they serve.

This position is fully remote (work from home) and requires a federal background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Create and/or leverage existing design patterns that meet both users, business, and technical needs.
  • Demonstrate and teach government agencies human-centered design, lean and agile methodologies.
  • Communicate design decisions and what user needs they are solving verbally or visually.
  • Communicate effectively across organizational, technical and political boundaries, understanding the context.
  • Present wireframes and prototypes to client stakeholders.
  • Communicate early and often to engineering through prototypes, wireframes, and/or other visual mock-ups, as well as co-working.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to understand system constraints and define level of effort for design decisions.
  • Establish and nurture professional relationships with client stakeholders.
  • Make complex information and language simple and accessible for non-technical audiences.
  • Help facilitate client discovery workshops.
  • Keep a structured project rhythm of iterative design: incorporating feedback, launching quickly, and testing hypotheses.
  • Drive the style guide and/or component-based design system.
  • Contribute to the design practice area.

Specific Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3+ years experience in software, web, and/or mobile visual design.
  • Minimum of 3 years working in an agile/scrum/lean methodologies environment.
  • You are well-versed in all aspects of current visual design standards and trends and will be responsible for managing project design reviews and execution for all visual project work.
  • You can give and receive constructive feedback, enabling the feedback loop.
  • You can moderate conflict resolution within teams.
  • You can define and communicate MVP solutions and opportunities for iteration.
  • You can make disciplined decisions based on available information and research evidence.
  • You can understand and work within given constraints (such as technology, policy, regulatory, financial, and legal constraints).
  • Openness to diversity and working with people from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge in accessibility web standards and interaction patterns (USWDS).
  • Can manage complex projects and stakeholder relationships.
  • You are up-to-date on the latest software tools and trends. This could be using tools such as: Sketch, Invision, Figma, Zeplin, and some HTML/CSS/JS, etc.
  • You have a portfolio that demonstrates ability to design compelling visual experiences and user interfaces around business, user, and technology requirements.
  • You have experience working with data visualization and data-driven storytelling through design.
