About the role
As a Principal Product Designer on the Design Technology and Artificial Intelligence team, you’re responsible for understanding customer needs, developing ideas and direction, and working with a cross-functional team to explore new applications of emerging technology. With a continuous learning and entrepreneurial approach, you’ll work to prove early signals on customer behavior and empower customers with new ways to find their next home. As principal, you’ll work strategically across functional areas, including applied science, mobile development, research, and behavioral science. Ultimately, you’ll explore how to bring more delight and authenticity to an emotional part of our user’s journey as part of our mission to make Zillow the most-loved place to discover, buy, sell, or rent a home.
Responsibilities:
- Design digital experiences for web, iOS, Android, and operator platforms
- Advocate for customer needs and ensure that designs address customer goals
- Work with product managers, researchers, content designers, applied scientists, and engineers
- Lead design activities like problem definition, storytelling, journey mapping, co-design sessions, prototyping, design critique, and user testing
- Propose, test, and evaluate ideas that improve Zillow customer experiences
- Build detailed information architecture, interaction models, and UI patterns
- Present design work and regularly engage with partners for feedback
- Lead multiple projects independently and deliver high-quality work on time
- Partner with other designers to ensure design consistency and excellence
- Share expertise and mentorship to help others develop skills

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.
In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City and Washington the standard base pay range for this role is $161,700.00 – $258,300.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York City and Washington and may not be applicable to other locations.
In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.
Who you are
- 7+ years as a product designer, user experience designer, design lead, or similar role
- Strong understanding of Emerging Technology trends and the proven ability to translate complex AI concepts into intuitive and engaging user experiences
- Ability to prototype and iterate on AI-driven interactions and interfaces
- Ability to collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of AI features
- Ability to balance the ethical considerations and potential biases associated with AI algorithms
- Understanding of the limitations and challenges of AI technology and its implications for user experience design
- Experience working with emerging technology to develop new customer experiences
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Experience building relationships and working optimally with diverse, cross-functional teams
- Experience developing tools and frameworks to help teams work better together
- Experience providing direction that helps designers grow their skills and deliver their best work
- Experience identifying customer insights through user research and discovery activities
- Experience crafting products and services using human-centered design principles
- Experience shipping products that get meaningful results for customers and businesses
- Examples of high-quality interaction and visual design work in a design portfolio
- Examples of critical thinking, creativity, and risk-taking in design projects
- Expertise in interaction design, visual design, and other user experience fields
- Expertise with Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar design and prototyping tools
