The National Network Print Planner will be part of a new team focused on ensuring the journalism produced at USA Today and Gannett’s 200+ local newspapers is distributed throughout the company’s many print editions and eNewspaper products. The person in this role should be a self-starting, creative problem solver, skilled communicator, and audience-centered advocate for our journalism.

The national network print planner will coordinate efforts with a team of three rewrite editors, who will edit and rewrite USA Today and local market content for use nationally across the USA Today Network. Working closely with the rewrite editors, USA Today’s editors and print team, and Gannett’s Design Center wire editors, the person in this role will orchestrate daily content sharing across every section. Strong news judgement is required to select the best stories for our national and local audiences. Candidates should feel comfortable when working under pressure and thrive on hitting multiple daily deadlines.
This position is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and communicate daily news offerings for use in print across the USA Today Network.
  • Oversee select stories through the editing workflow, acting as a main contact between the rewrite team, newsrooms, and the Design Center.
  • Coordinate with rewrite editors on timing of content and updates needed for stories to ensure rolling deadlines are met.
  • Identify stories to be shared as centerpieces and organize the numerous elements for use in all markets.
  • Work effectively with newsroom planners, USA Today and the Design Center to maximize use of Network content across Gannett publications.
  • Some early morning/night and/or weekend work required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing print budgeting and content flow on deadline.
  • Ability to independently resolve concerns and make decisions.
  • Command of editing and headline writing techniques to produce engaging, error-free work under tight deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of newsworthiness at both the national and local levels.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.
