Managing Editor, Hispanic/Latino Initiatives
Gannett is seeking a creative, outcomes-obsessed leader to serve as Managing Editor of Hispanic/Latino Initiatives (ME). The person in this role will sit at the intersection of Content, Product and Revenue, leveraging a growth mindset to create, test and launch experiences designed for audiences who prefer to receive their news and information in Spanish. The goal of this role is to increase audience through content that serves distinct Hispanic/Latino audiences in diverse communities across the country.
The ME has the skill and knowledge to develop a creative, ambitious, and achievable plan to reach and engage a diverse audience, to build teams of content creators, and to quickly scale experiments for maximum impact across markets. The person in this role understands how to identify new audiences, create relevant experiences, and encourage engagement in ways that contribute to the financial outcomes that support enterprise growth. The ME has a deep understanding of content distribution tactics relevant to Hispanic/Latino audiences (YouTube, WhatsApp, SEO, off-platform distribution) and the ability to turn audience analytics into actionable insight.
The ME will work with the Senior Director of Innovation and Experimentation to drive this new venture, including P&L responsibility and goals tied both to audience and revenue. The ME will be tasked with leveraging the talent already within Gannett and then identifying roles to build and fill.
The Managing Editor, Hispanic/Latino Initiatives will:
- Assist the Senior Director in driving cross-departmental commitment to plan and test growth initiatives, from identifying capability gaps to prioritizing engineering needs and coordinating with newsrooms to ensure requirements are met to achieve the Company’s strategic priorities in Spanish.
- Participate in tracking the P&L on strategic growth initiatives, tying new content experiences to revenue results.
- Assess the feasibility of platforms, partners, and products, collaborating with Revenue and Transformation to expand audience and dramatically increase engagement.
- Oversee development of new content initiatives, set a clear mission around audience engagement and monetization.
- Work with Transformation and Revenue to develop a set of leading indicators that help us stay on plan and respond to industry and audience behavior changes.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 10-15 years’ experience in a digital media, with at least 6 years in leadership.
- Spanish language fluency required.
- Ability to maintain focus on high quality journalism and driving new revenue streams.
- A fearless tenacity for experimenting, learning and scaling.
- A history of successful collaborations, especially involving Spanish-language and Hispanic/Latino focused news and initiatives.
- Agility at managing multiple projects and leading through action and collaboration.
- A passion for innovation, experimentation, change management, driving new workflows.
- Proven experience in forging strategic partnerships with platform and content creators.
- Demonstrated success in new product launches that increase audience and deliver ROI.
- Experience using news analytics to understand and grow audience.
