The Manager, User Design Experience, functions both strategically and at a systems-level by applying a user-centered design methodology to manage a team of user experience (UX) design professionals to arrive at successful solutions for education-related applications that support business goals and user needs. The role works with leadership and practitioners across UX, Product Management, and Development to guide the UX design of complex applications and is a leader who is creative and technically adept, highly collaborative, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and passionate about improving educational experiences for people.

- Manage a team of UX design professionals including overseeing and guiding their work, developing performance management goals, providing timely feedback throughout the year, and playing a critical role in the formal annual and mid-year performance management processes;
- Create an open, inclusive, and trusting environment where teamwork and cooperation are valued
- Partner with product management, engineering, and stakeholders to define and drive the product vision for major initiatives or multiple smaller initiatives throughout the product lifecycle;
- Engage in planning at the product level by working across product owners and across scrum teams to understand the design needs for the stories necessary to release the next and future product increments;
- Understand the behaviors, motivations, unarticulated challenges and unstated needs of our customers to develop relevant and impactful interactions and experiences;
- Define user goals and ways to measure success;
- Lead the work of user experience (UX) designers and researchers to realize the vision, execute the strategy, fulfill the requirements, and create product designs that achieve business and user goals within time and budget;
- Define and articulate design problems to facilitate focus and create simple, elegant and effective designs that align with product vision and business outcomes;
- Drive excellence in the final visual and interaction details of our products, both through own work and through the thoughtful, constructive and kind feedback given to others;
- Develop user flows, user journeys, conceptual diagrams, wireframes, and interactive prototypes for complex applications with multiple user roles;
- Effectively prioritize projects, manage tasks, and communicate with the project management team, delivering projects on time and on budget;
- Use data from various measurement tools in conjunction with user research to provide insights on user behavior and identify recommended design changes;
- Review implementation for adherence to designs and style guide;
- Understand and incorporate design principles and accessibility and mobile-friendly/responsive guidelines into product designs;
- Identify new opportunities and generate innovative ideas to continuously improve our processes, products, and culture across disciplines and teams;
- Proactively support knowledge-sharing across disciplines, teams, and projects;
- Mentor and engage within the UX team and across disciplines, teams, and projects.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 2 – 6 Full-time Equivalent (FTE) regular employees and/or contractors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in human-computer interactions, product design or related field AND
- Seven (7) years of experience in planning and executing successful web applications/managing design INCLUDING
- Three (3) years of managing design teams OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Certificates and Licenses: None required.
Other Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience managing people including hiring, providing feedback, and managing performance (goals and skills development)
- Demonstrated ability to build meaningful cross-functional relationships and work collaboratively
- Demonstrated experience developing standards, processes, and guidelines to help teams do better work
- Demonstrated sense of the principles of user-centered design
- Demonstrated use of innovative graphical user interface design, information design, and interaction design, including accessible and inclusive design
- Fluency in best practices for web-based and mobile information architecture and design, as well as strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques
- Knowledge of UX research methodologies and analyzing research data.
- Technical competence
- Excellent written, oral and diagrammatic communication skills to effectively present and negotiate design solutions to a variety of audiences, including senior leadership
- Adept with relevant design and information flow software
- Experience with online collaboration tools such as Miro, Google Docs, etc.
- Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.); Web proficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to work through ambiguity and multiple priorities.
- An online portfolio that communicates a range of successful user-centered designs while also demonstrating breadth and creativity and proven experience in telling stories, building UI models, generating detailed wire frames or prototypes, and delivering comprehensive specifications.
- Ability to clear required background check
Desired Qualifications:
- Strong creative skills with a strong sense of the visual aesthetic and a consistent track record in the craft of design.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment
- Experience with consumer products
- Experience working in educational technology
- Experience designing for children (K-12 graders).

Compensation & Benefits: Stride, Inc. considers a person’s education, experience, and qualifications, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value when determining a new employee’s salary level. Salaries will differ based on these factors, the position’s level and expected contribution, and the employee’s benefits elections.
- We anticipate the salary range to be $106,631 to $159,946. Eligible employees may receive a bonus. This salary is not guaranteed, as an individual’s compensation can vary based on several factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions. Stride offers a robust benefits package for eligible employees that can include health benefits, retirement contributions, and paid time off.
