You’re a strong technical UX and team leader with extensive experience in complex B2B products. You’re skilled at defining and articulating a user-centric design vision and at driving awareness and alignment for that vision across the company. You’ve developed effective processes with product management and engineering leadership, and built cross-functional links with colleagues in sales, marketing, R&D, support, and operations. You’re a doer who uses Lean UX methods to test ideas and help teams build the right thing.

Expel is looking for a director of UX to lead a high-functioning team of UX managers, product and growth designers, and technical content writers in support of our Workbench security operations platform. This role reports to the VP of product management.

What you can do for Expel

To enable and support Expel’s growth, you’ll achieve scale and efficiency for UX while ensuring high quality, collaboration, culture, and retention.

You’ll also:

  • Create a UX and content vision for the product that improves analyst efficiency and customers’ time to value, unifies security concepts, allows extensibility and configurability, and promotes reuse of patterns and code.
  • Ensure our strategic priorities are well resourced for UX and content, and clearly communicate trade-offs when there are more priorities than resources.
  • Identify, hire for, and build out new competencies as neededfor example, growth design, service design, UX research, design/content ops, or service designin the United States and Ireland.
  • Create strategic design deliverables such as frameworks, strategy decks, customer journeys, visions of future experiences and evangelize these cross-product “blueprints” across teams.
  • Represent UX and user-centered thinking in budget planning, cross-functional planning, and with our customer advisory board.
  • Evangelize UX & content team wins to the organization in a way that promotes team successes consistent with stakeholder sentiment.
  • Create and maintain job descriptions and career laddering, design effective onboarding, and consistently measure & manage team and individual performance.

What you should bring with you

  • Deep experience in product design, problem framing, solving design problems, journey and service mapping.
  • Experience designing and launching new B2B products.
  • Ability to create accountability through clear expectations and regular feedback, and drive teams toward outcomes.
  • Experience leading UX quality and design operations initiatives.
  • Comfort with ambiguity; the ability to find a path forward and lead others when the way forward is unclear, risky, or complex.
  • Self-awareness, humility, resilience, and a sense of humor.
  • Exceptional listening and conflict management skills.

Education and experience

  • 10+ years experience in UX design leadership of complex products, services, and/or product suites
  • 5+ years experience managing and building a UX team, leading both managers and ICs.
  • Experience in the cybersecurity industry.
  • Experience in design leadership roles in companies at various growth stages / sizes.
  • Experience in core craft skills such as product and interaction design, workflow mapping, user research, and information architecture.
  • Experience designing and launching new B2B products.
  • Masters degree preferred.

Additional notes

The base salary range for this role is between $175,500 USD and $254,500 USD + bonus eligibility and equity.

We believe in paying transparently and equitably. Your salary will ultimately be based on factors such as your experience, skills, team equity, and market data. You’ll also be eligible for unlimited PTO (which we model and encourage), work location flexibility, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and really excellent health benefits.
