Title: Director, Software Engineering (Service Infrastructure)
Location: Remote US

Affirm’s Service Infrastructure team is building a large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant global infrastructure shared across multiple financial products, merchants and vendors. Ensuring that our infrastructure is transparently available to engineers and scales efficiently to stay ahead of business growth is a critical part of Affirm’s success story. The Service Infrastructure organization is responsible for building and scaling foundational infrastructure and frameworks across multiple AWS regions, Multi-region/DR strategy, Kubernetes (k8s) fleet management, Capacity Engineering, Observability and SRE to enable high availability, reliability and security for Affirm partners and customers. We pride ourselves on our culture across engineering design, architecture, writing detailed tech specs and automating running large scale operations via code.
As the Director of Service Infrastructure you will be responsible for developing the organizational and technical strategy to hire and build a world class team to enable the highest levels of Reliability, Performance, and Operational Excellence to support Affirm scale and growth. You will be working closely with other Affirm leaders to develop strategy, and mentor leaders on the team developing and supporting the software and systems that allow the rest of engineering to produce and deploy software that is scalable, reliable and secure.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the organization by hiring, coaching, managing, and supporting a team of senior engineering leaders in management and technical contributor roles.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, humility, constant improvement, and rigor to build a team that can confidently tackle complex challenges across multiple technical domains.
- Provide leadership in development of a technical architecture and strategy for a complex and quickly growing business and serve a broader engineering team.
- Ensure that our systems maintain world class performance and availability as we move from a monolithic to service oriented architecture.
- Expand the engineering organization by rapidly hiring an exceptional and diverse group of engineers, taking advantage of our remote-first model of working.
What We Look For
- Strong experience leading multiple engineering teams to deliver high quality software, systems, and support through iterative improvement and regular deployment of services at scale to support other engineering teams, products, and business outcomes.
- Track record of successfully leading engineering teams at both rapidly scaling startups and complex larger technology companies.
- Expertise in synthesizing complex technical requirements, designs, trade-offs, and capabilities into clear decisions and communication across multiple engineering teams in a timely manner.
- Extensive experience building and owning large-scale, geographically distributed backend systems.
- Track record of successfully mentoring and developing leaders in management and individual contributor roles.
