CivicActions’ next Director of Design will lead an amazing team of talented designers in creating the future of government for millions of people. We imagine, design, and deliver digital product and service experiences for US civilian agencies including the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services, the Veterans Administration, and the National Science Foundation. You have experience working with government, leading in an agency environment, and searching inside yourself for insights. You will be responsible for strategy and growth in all areas of design, landing new opportunities, and evolving the capabilities and offerings for the entire company.

Responsible for:

  • Organizational Responsibility planning and managing objectives, strategies and budgets for the design discipline at CivicActions:
    • Leading the design discipline while collaborating with our product and engineering teams
    • Supporting the career paths of multiple team members
    • Providing coaching and mentoring to members of the design team
    • Be present, collaborative, and caring when interacting with team members and clients
    • Work with program leadership, as well as our marketing and sales teams on new business development, developing approaches to help clients identify and solve problems
    • Champion new, creative exercises and processes to infuse design into the CivicActions’ culture
    • Nurture a collaborative cross-functional culture between engineering, product and design
    • Maintain awareness of wider industry design and relevant technology trends and bring thought leadership to public events and strategic opportunities
    • Advocate and build alignment and expertise around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in designing services for the public
    • Recruit, interview and hire new team members who contribute to the positive growth of the team
  • Project Responsibilities:
    • Assist in planning and running effective client workshops and client stakeholder meetings
    • Teaching the future of design and innovation to federal government procurement officers
    • Participate in client-facing work to learn, inspire teams, and ensure our work delivers positive public impact

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Preferred Experience:
    • Experience leading design teams through growth and change in a dynamic environment
    • Business development experience in government systems design and innovation
    • 10+ years of digital design experience
    • 5+ years of direct management experience, including managing other managers
    • Ability to inspire people in a highly collaborative, team based environment leveraging agile approaches
    • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Required Qualifications
    • 5+ years leadership experience at a digital agency / professional services firm
    • Successful experience building government technology design teams and working with government clients in an agile environment
    • Experience in UX research and Design including facilitation of user sessions and client workshops
    • Experience leading $5MM+ client business
    • Experience in reviewing existing systems and process to identify issues and develop recommendations
    • Passion for learning and teaching
    • U.S. Resident 3 of the past 5 years
    • Able to pass a federal background check

Salary Range

$160,000 – $185,000 USD per year

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
