Job Description

USB’s Corporate Finance team is expanding to include a new competitive analysis function responsible for the development of detailed peer bank industry analysis and comparative assessments against the Company’s highly diversified and successful operating model. The Director of Competitive Analysis will assume a key role supporting the Company’s broader Corporate Finance mandate, which includes highly collaborative Investor Relations, Financial Planning & Analysis, and Economic Analysis functions.

The incumbent will report directly to the Director of Investor Relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts front-to-back thematic, market, and company research that identifies and evaluates key strategic trends, market dynamics, key stakeholder strengths, opportunities, and threats associated with various focus areas.
  • Drafts internal competitive research reports including, alerts, company updates, industry notes, sell-side coverage analyst analysis and/or target shareholder prospecting
  • Builds and/or develops company-specific financial models (including maintenance of required macro and industry data series) and performs due diligence of industry models for accurate earnings consensus gathering and/or fine-tuning, as needed
  • Supports management’s interactions with institutional investors by responding to requests for reports, models and/or other ad-hoc analysis.
  • Maintains constant coverage of industry-related news, trends, and developments and disseminates insights when appropriate to internal stakeholders.
  • Supports preparations for industry and company-sponsored events/conferences, as needed
  • Stays abreast of trends in business conditions and fiscal/monetary policy that could affect the broader macro environment or USB specifically
  • Provides oversight and professionally develops an additional competitive research analyst.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relatable experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, financial engineering, accounting, statistics, or econometrics (e.g., B.A., B.S.)
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA) and/or CFA preferred

Skills/Experience:

  • Strong financial acumen, including competencies in accounting/financial modeling, securities valuation, and an aptitude toward financial markets
  • Possesses a deep understanding of both technical and fundamental analysis, asset allocation, and strategy research
  • Credible understanding of equity markets on a global and domestic level.
  • Strategic self-starter, detail-oriented, resourceful, hard-working, and comfortable initiating contact and interacting with internal / external stakeholders
  • Strong critical thinking, idea generation and thought leadership capabilities.
  • Comfortable synthesizing data as well as applying logic and reasoning to decipher the strengths and weaknesses of a particular problem set
  • Experience in Equity Research, Investment Banking, or Private Equity; Specific industry focus on banking / financials is preferred.
  • Demonstrated writing skills and the ability to work independently while also capable of delivering in a team-oriented environment
  • Advanced computer skills with high proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word applications
  • Good listening, verbal, written communication, and organizational skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for establishing and developing relationships with multiple stakeholders, including internal senior management and external securities professionals
