Job Title: Director, Learning Experience Design

What you’ll do:
Using strong leadership skills and strategic thinking, this role mentors and guides Core Math Learning Experience Design (LXD) team members in developing and delivering high quality digital-first solutions that solve specific market problems shared by teachers and students. The person in this role is a self-starter willing to make tough decisions with some guidance. This person develops relationships and works in close partnership with their leadership counterparts across the organization to provide expertise and guidance, increase collaboration, and improve multi-directional transfer of knowledge.
Working in Learning Experience Design (LXD) for Core Mathematics, the Director will be responsible for the following primary duties:
User Experience and Instructional Design:
- Coaches and champions scrum teams to prioritize and influence strategic innovations and enhancements to the end-to-end user journey for all digital experiences on HMH’s teaching and learning platform.
- Leads and advocates for scrum teams in delivering value to customers in keeping with capacity constraints, budget, interdependencies across teams, and market expectations, often arriving at and advocating for fresh, innovative solutions that surprise and delight users.
- Applies and coaches others in many areas: discipline-specific knowledge, assessment, SEL, hands-on learning, differentiation, standards analysis, data analytics, English learner support, etc. Champions, supports, and creates cross-training efforts across the group to promote ambidexterity.
- Models flexibility across grades. Understands the dynamics of the learning experience across grades and guides/models others to continually develop that understanding.
- Fosters collaborative relationships with other scrum teams/disciplines within and outside of Core Solutions as appropriate to ensure strong connections and flow of product information and development needs up and down the value chain.
- Supports LXD team members across Core Math LXD in creating and adapting content for a digital-first experience.
Agile Development:
- May serve as a product owner or coach on a cross-functional team responsible for solving more complex teaching and learning problems. Relies on discovery and data analysis to test, develop, deliver, and iteratively optimize solutions in a variety of media formats. Effectively prioritizes and re-prioritizes major projects, based on business constraints, company strategy, customer impact, and capacity limitations. Key contact for resolving issues not solvable by individual scrum teams.
- Models the application of agile methodologies in support of high-quality iterative development. Evangelizes for agile methodologies across teams. Adeptly uses retrospectives to solve problems and improve team output and collaboration.
Data Analysis:
- Seeks out, applies, and synthesizes data from a variety of sources, including HMH’s teaching and learning platform, to address market problems.
- Understands, utilizes, and trains others in analyzing usage and efficacy data (e.g., task difficulty, time on task, growth data as connected via the spine) to lead and support teams in further iterating/improving upon instructional content.
People:
- Seeks out opportunities for deepening own knowledge and expertise in market environment, pedagogical and content issues, and process improvements.
- Manages 4-7 direct reports, providing coaching and career growth support.
- Mentors and guides others in such a way as to hold self and others accountable and grow strengths across the team.
Definition of Success:
- Iterative deliveries of solutions that meet market problem needs on time and budget as measured by product sales, customer testimonials, and platform usage data
- Ability to concisely communicate program goals and philosophy to internal stakeholders
- Skilled at navigating discussions and negotiations at the stakeholder and leadership level
- Successful state, district, and third-party evaluations that reflect the high-quality and usability of teaching and learning solutions
- Fosters scrum team and extended team efficiency, morale, and success as measured by team surveys/retrospectives and other means of team feedback
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferred areas of study Education, Math, or Instructional Design
- Minimum 5 years of educational Industry experience
- Subject-matter experience in K-12 Math pedagogy
- Instructional design expertise; digital development and delivery
- Comfortable working in a variety of digital authoring tools and content-management systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Agile, digital CMS, data analysis/interpretation
Preferred but not necessary: skills/education/experience/working knowledge
- Proficiency in JIRA
- Teaching experience/experience working in a K–12 (primary or secondary) mathematics education setting a strong asset
- Passionate about creating engaging and effective (fun!) learning products
- Deep knowledge of curriculum standards and criteria for evaluating instructional materials from various states, large school districts, and national organizations
- Experience in developing content with DEI focus
