Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.
A Little About Us
Yahoo is a global media and tech powerhouse dedicated to connecting people to their passions. With nearly 900 million users worldwide, we provide a range of services from news and finance to shopping and gaming. Our mission at Yahoo News is to be a guide through the digital wilderness and help users achieve their goals, both big and small. Right now, the Originals team (on which you’d sit) is focusing on making sure Yahoo News remains an indispensable part of readers’ lives while also working to connect with new audiences and position the brand for the future.
A Lot About You
We’re looking for a Senior Social Editor to help lead storytelling across Yahoo’s News, Entertainment and Life accounts. In this role, you’ll leverage your visual production and creative writing skills to connect with users and build trust among new audiences—all in an effort to drive engagement and growth across platforms. We’re seeking someone who can confidently generate original and compelling ways to explore stories visually, with sharp copywriting skills to match.
In this role, you’ll be expected to balance daily editorial execution with broader business needs. You will maintain and foster new relationships with our vast publisher and creator network, often representing Yahoo in meetings with external stakeholders. You’ll work closely with the supervising social editor, video and design leads, and site editors to package stories, and you’ll also help delegate assignments to the broader team of social editors.
The right person for this role is deeply knowledgeable about the social media landscape and can pitch, produce and edit fresh, social-first concepts in line with Yahoo’s voice and editorial goals. You’re probably someone who spends too much time on TikTok and Instagram, and you have a basic knowledge of (and comfort in covering) everything from the latest on Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni to that weird new health fad and what’s happening in the White House.
The ideal candidate will be a U.S.-based social media journalist who can manage multiple tasks simultaneously and nimbly pivot between assignments. This role demands a creative, detail-oriented, organized, and strategic editor who is well-versed in pitching, producing social media graphics on Canva, copywriting and copyediting. A breadth of knowledge across current events, pop culture, health and wellness is a must. This role reports to the Supervising Social Editor.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize Canva and other design tools to create engaging, shareable social media graphics, videos, and memes.
- Ideate new and innovative visual ways to tell stories across each of Yahoo’s social verticals while serving as the primary liaison to the design team for all social visual assets.
- Create and maintain content calendars for the News, Entertainment, and Life social media channels, with an eye towards trending topics and leveraging our franchises to build brand IP.
- Identify content from across our ecosystem – including original Yahoo reporting, our Creator network, and hundreds of premium publishers – to publish the right stories on the right platforms at the right times.
- Serve as an assigning editor, assisting the supervising producer in planning and executing the daily content lineup and longer lead projects. This will involve editing visuals and copy from other social editors for clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the brand voice.
- Collaborate with writers and editors across the Originals team on content packaging for breaking news events, tentpoles, franchises, features and new product launches.
- Support the wider social team in live tentpole coverage, including but not limited to awards season and political events.
- Maintain Yahoo’s editorial voice and uphold the Yahoo News editorial standards and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4-6 years experience in social media-focused journalism roles.
- Experience working in fast-paced and/or large-scale media, news or social media companies.
- Extensive knowledge of legacy and emerging social platforms, particularly Instagram, including best practices, SEO, industry trends and audience consumption habits.
- Strong copywriting and editing skills with the ability to quickly adapt text-based content for social and messaging platforms.
- Moderate to extensive knowledge of graphic editing software like Canva and experience using brand templates and graphics to create visual content for social.
- Demonstrated news judgment and a commitment to journalistic ethics.
- Attention to detail and strong communication skills.
- Comfortability covering a wide range of topics using different visual formats.
- Ability to craft compelling, error-free copy and graphics for social audiences that adhere to AP and house style guidelines.
- Collegial, adaptable and eager to experiment with storytelling that delivers the greatest impact for users.
