SmithRx is scaling fast, and this role is about making sure the database layer doesn’t crack under the weight. You’ll own reliability, performance, security, and growth strategy across AWS-hosted data systems, including PostgreSQL and key AWS database services, in a regulated environment handling sensitive PHI.

Schedule

  • Full-time, remote
  • Hands-on senior ownership of cloud database reliability, performance, and security
  • Cross-functional collaboration with Security, Data Engineering, and Product/Engineering teams

What You’ll Do

  • Manage and maintain PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Athena on AWS, ensuring high availability and reliability
  • Monitor database health and performance, proactively identifying and resolving issues
  • Design and implement scaling and growth strategies to support rapidly increasing demand
  • Build and maintain strong security controls to protect sensitive PHI from internal and external threats
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and security frameworks (HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.)
  • Design and implement Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans (BCP/DR)
  • Build and maintain a pipeline to restore anonymized production data into lower environments
  • Partner with the Security team on risk analysis and incident response planning for data infrastructure
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Architecture, and Release teams on database design recommendations for new features
  • Work with Data Engineering to support ETL jobs and downstream applications
  • Support dev teams on complex query development, tuning DML, and promoting strong database coding practices

What You Need

  • 5+ years of Database Administration experience
  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science or a related field
  • Experience managing SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, Redshift, DynamoDB, BigQuery, MongoDB, Cassandra, Snowflake)
  • Deep AWS database knowledge (RDS, Aurora, Redshift, DynamoDB, etc.)
  • Strong performance tuning skills: identifying bottlenecks, optimizing queries and schemas
  • Experience with monitoring/observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog), dashboards, alerting, and metrics
  • Experience with change management practices, policies, and procedures
  • Background in infrastructure automation, reliability engineering, load balancing, monitoring, and logging
  • Experience in regulated environments (HIPAA preferred; GDPR a plus)
  • Strong scripting in SQL, Python, Shell, etc.
