If you love living in AOSP internals, kernel land, and low-level debugging, this is a rare seat: you’ll directly shape custom consumer hardware that ships at real scale. You’ll work hands-on with early prototypes and own the platform decisions that make Skylight devices fast, stable, and genuinely delightful for families.

About Skylight
Skylight builds simple consumer products that connect families, including Skylight Frame and Skylight Calendar. Bootstrapped and profitable, they’ve scaled to $180M+ in annual revenue with millions of customers, and they’re growing a small-but-mighty engineering team.

Schedule

  • Remote (U.S.)
  • Full-time
  • Senior (or higher) level role
  • Expect close collaboration with product, hardware, and manufacturing partners across the build cycle

What You’ll Do

  • Customize and maintain Skylight’s proprietary AOSP fork
  • Partner with ODMs/manufacturers to integrate and validate AOSP patches, BSPs, and HALs
  • Build features that require deep Android internals knowledge (PackageManager, ActivityManager, WindowManager)
  • Implement and debug IPC with AIDL/Binder
  • Develop and debug Linux kernel code and device drivers for custom hardware
  • Perform low-level device debugging using tools like UART and JTAG
  • Build and maintain OTA system image update workflows and release practices
  • Profile and optimize system performance across the stack using tools like systrace and perfetto
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for AOSP and low-level system work
  • Support AOSP project execution to hit delivery timelines
  • Provide internal/external support for system-level and AOSP-related issues
  • Stay current on platform trends and best practices, and communicate progress clearly to stakeholders

What You Need

  • 6+ years of professional AOSP platform development experience
  • Expert command of AOSP internals (PackageManager, ActivityManager, etc.)
  • Proven experience customizing and maintaining an AOSP fork
  • Strong Java/Kotlin skills plus professional C experience
  • Hands-on Linux kernel development and low-level debugging experience
  • Experience implementing AIDL/Binder interfaces
  • Solid understanding of OTA system image updates and release management
  • Experience with performance profiling tools (systrace, perfetto)

Benefits

  • Competitive salary + equity package
  • 401(k) matching
  • Wellness, learning, and home-office budgets
  • Health, dental, and vision plans
  • Tremendous autonomy to set the direction of your work
  • Unlimited PTO

For candidates in CO and CA, the posted range is $180K–$200K based on experience. If you want a role where you’re not just shipping apps but shaping the platform and the hardware experience end-to-end, this is the one.

These senior platform roles don’t sit open forever. If AOSP is your home base, apply while it’s live.

Happy Hunting,
