Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform – Remote

Coinbase is hiring a senior engineer to help build the “plumbing” that moves, stores, secures, and serves data across the company. This is platform work: warehouses, lakes, orchestration, batch + streaming pipelines, SDKs, self-serve tooling, and the guardrails (security, lineage, observability) that keep everything compliant and trustworthy.

About Coinbase
Coinbase’s mission is to increase economic freedom in the world by building the onchain platform and helping shape the future global financial system. The culture is intense and built for people who like big, high-impact problems. Roles are remote-first, but not remote-only, with multiple in-person offsites expected each year.

Schedule

  • Full-time, remote-first (not remote-only)
  • In-person participation required for multiple offsites annually
  • Base salary range: $186,005–$218,900 (bonus + benefits included)
  • Application limit: max 4 applications in any 30-day period
  • Job #: P62464
  • #LI-Remote

What You’ll Do

  • Build and operate core data services:
    • Storage: cloud data warehouse + data lake
    • Orchestration: Airflow
    • Batch processing: Spark + SQL
    • Streaming: Kafka
    • Query federation + caching
    • Time-series DB, graph DB, real-time event aggregation stores
  • Build and maintain data integration + process SDKs used by internal services/product teams
  • Create self-service apps so teams can manage and troubleshoot their own pipelines
  • Build end-to-end data security + observability: access controls, data quality, catalog + lineage, usage auditing
  • Turn requests from analysts, ML, and security/compliance into reusable patterns and scalable platform components

What You Need

  • 5+ years software engineering experience
  • Strong backend skills in Python, Go, or Java
  • Experience with data systems or pipelines (enough to be dangerous and dependable)
  • Familiarity with scale-out patterns, caching, key/value stores, and columnar storage
  • Ability to use SQL, Python, Airflow, and BI thinking to get operational insights (not just ship code)

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision
  • Health Savings Account with company contributions
  • Disability and life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Wellness stipend
  • Mobile/internet reimbursement
  • Connections stipend
  • Volunteer time off
  • Fertility counseling and benefits
  • Generous time off/leave policy
  • Option to be paid in digital currency (where available)

My blunt take: this role is best for somebody who likes building systems other teams depend on, and doesn’t need constant product spotlight to feel alive. If you want “feature work,” this ain’t it. If you want scale, reliability, and real enterprise-grade platform ownership, this is it.

Staff Machine Learning Engineer – (Platform) – Remote

If you’re the kind of ML engineer who can take messy, high-stakes operational problems and turn them into clean, production-grade systems, Coinbase is hiring at the “own the strategy and ship the platform” level. This role is about applying ML and GenAI to automate risk-heavy ops work like document review and risk assessment, at scale, with explainability and real-time protection baked in.

About Coinbase
Coinbase’s mission is to increase economic freedom in the world by building the onchain platform and helping shape the future global financial system. The culture is intense and built for people who like big, hard problems and constant growth. • Design and implement models that protect Coinbase user funds
  • Fine-tune LLMs for automated document processing and risk assessment workflows
  • Build real-time ML pipelines that detect and prevent risk before it hits production
  • Translate domain expert knowledge into features, signals, and model designs
  • Build explainable ML systems that can justify risk decisions and outputs
  • Partner with platform teams to deploy models at scale with high availability and low latency

What You Need

  • 8+ years of industry ML experience (or PhD + 5 years)
  • Prior experience with Payment Risk, Credit Risk, or Account Takeover models
  • MS in ML/CS or related technical field (PhD preferred)
  • Strong developer skill set, including using auto-code generation techniques for scalable ML and distributed systems
  • Strong grounding in modern ML: DNNs, transformers, LLMs, classification
  • Proven experience building and deploying production ML systems at scale
  • Ability to balance model complexity with real production constraints (latency, uptime, failure modes)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with domain experts

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision
  • Health Savings Account with company contributions
  • Disability and life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Wellness stipend

  • Generous time off/leave policy
  • Option to be paid in digital currency (where available)
  • Bonus + equity eligibility

Real talk: this is not a “train models and hand them off” job. This is end-to-end ownership, production reality, and being accountable for systems that protect money and trust.
