🧾 About the Role
Wattpad, part of the WEBTOON family of brands, is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to help scale its real-time data infrastructure. You’ll lead backend architecture for high-throughput distributed systems, working closely with engineering, data science, analytics, and security teams. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, writes clean and scalable code, and enjoys mentoring others while building resilient systems that support 170M+ monthly users.

• Remote (U.S. or Canada, excluding Quebec)
• Salary: $120,000–$160,000 CAD
• Core hours: 9am–5pm EST
• Optional office locations: Toronto or Halifax
• Lead large-scale, high-impact technical initiatives
📋 What You’ll Own
• Architect and scale Kafka-based distributed data systems handling 200K+ msgs/sec
• Build microservices in Golang and Python on AWS
• Lead backend architecture and reduce system bottlenecks
• Improve infrastructure observability, resiliency, and uptime
• Guide adoption of next-gen data platforms and tools
• Partner with Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Security teams
• Write and review robust tests (unit, integration, service-level)
• Mentor team members and lead design decisions
• Own platform stability and performance
🎯 Must-Have Traits
• 8+ years in backend/software engineering roles
• Deep experience with Golang and/or Python
• Proven record building real-time systems with Kafka, Flink, or Kinesis
• Strong AWS experience and familiarity with cloud infrastructure at scale
• Background in large-scale data tools like Redshift, Glue, EMR, Airflow, or Spark
• Experience building and maintaining 24/7 systems
• Mentorship mindset and leadership experience
• Passion for maintainable code, resilient architecture, and continual improvement

• Redshift, Snowflake, or columnar warehouse experience
• Infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation)
• CI/CD automation or container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS)
• Experience with Elasticsearch, time-series DBs, or vector databases
